Ageing

What happens when the skins ages?

The ageing process of skin begins much earlier than most people think. In our early 20’s collagen and elastin production start to decrease each year by 1%. Our natural production of hyaluronic acid also begins to decrease. Natural facial contours alter as our fat distribution and skin elasticity changes.

There are many different signs of ageing skin and they all display on the skin differently. Some signs of an ageing skin are fine lines, wrinkles, dullness, thinning, dry patches, redness, pigmentation, age spots and uneven texture and tone.

What impacts ageing?

Ageing is mainly impacted by UV exposure, environment, lifestyle and genetics.

What should you do to prevent and improve the signs of ageing skin?

Prevention is key when it comes to ageing. Targeting the skins collagen and elastin production early is the most effective way to prevent the signs of ageing skin. However, it’s never too late to treat an ageing skin.

Prevent ageing skin by wearing SPF daily and using products with antioxidants to protect skin from free radical damage.

To improve ageing skin, use ingredients to remove dead skin and speed up cell turnover. This will create a brighter, smooth and even complexion. Targeting collagen and elastin production is essential for plumper, softer skin. Barrier building ingredients will also help with the overall health and strength of your skin as well as redness, texture, tone and pigmentation.

  • Stay out of direct sunlight and use SPF every single day. Sun is your worst enemy when it comes to ageing skin. It is just as important to wear SPF to the beach in the middle of the day as it is on your 6am morning walk. Simply apply SPF everyday, before leaving the house and always reapply!

  • Eat a healthy balanced diet, reduce alcohol and cut out smoking. Everything you put into your body will directly affect your skin, including medications.

  • Have a high-quality cosmeceutical skin care routine and be consistent with it. Ensure you are using the appropriate ingredients for preventing and improving ageing.
